Founded in 1874 to extend government protection and influence into the wild Canadian frontier of the 19th century, Fort Macleod has grown into a thriving community with a treasured respect for the early settlers who paved the way for later generations. At the Fort Museum of the North West Mounted Police and First Nations Interpretive Centre, you can learn more about this particular history and the role the early police force played in subduing many of the wild trading post and illegal trading networks that defined the early days of the western frontier.
Tickets to the museum are valid for the day of your arrival and the Museum is open from early May until late October every year. Upon entering the recreated fort, the self-guided exhibits can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours to complete.
Reading the stories of this world before cell phones and automobiles will transport you back in time to a wild age of bandits, outlaws, pioneers, fur traders and First Nations People. During the summer months of July and August, a special recreation of the Musical Ride takes place full of elaborate riding and synchronized movements on horseback to the sound of special arrangements.
