What makes Davids North Shore Tour a unique experience ?

Set aside in 1947, The PEI National Park was saved to show what the North Shore looked like before any development.

The house was built in 1895 by Alexander MacDonald, a wealthy businessman and one-time president of Standard Oil Company with John D. Rockefeller. Originally from Scotland, MacDonald left his native home to seek his fame and fortune and eventually landed in Cincinnati, Ohio. He became director of numerous companies, including several successful rail-lines, mining companies and the Third National Bank. He was also active in charities and philanthropy. His salaries and investments from a number of these posts allowed him to amass a considerable personal fortune.

The Covehead Harbour Lighthouse is a heritage lighthouse because of its historical, architectural, and community values.

Historical values
The Covehead Harbour Lighthouse is a very good example of the socio-economic development of Queens County. The current lighthouse and its predecessor have been important to the local fishing community and to recreational boaters as a guiding light to the entrance of Covehead Bay. The current lighthouse is an important symbol of the island’s maritime heritage as one of the most photographed lighthouses in Prince Edward Island.

Architectural values
The Covehead Harbour Lighthouse is an excellent example of a well-proportioned square tapered tower that exhibits a classical aesthetic. Added features, such as stylized brackets, the maple leaf on the lantern and the contrasting corner boards, combined with the innovative design, support its attractiveness. It is one of a number of square tapered wooden towers in Prince Edward Island, favoured because they were economical to construct and easy to maintain.

When the novel Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908, most people could only dream of visiting its magical setting. As the book became popular around the world, it’s likely that many readers had no idea where Prince Edward Island was. They may have even wondered, “Is it a real place?”

Today, millions of the book’s fans have made the trip to PEI and discovered the land that captivated Anne in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s stories. And for those who just can’t get enough of their favourite red-headed girl, or the woman who created her, there are Anne-related attractions all over the Island.

Here we will visit a real fishing village and wharf. No costumes here. We will witness Mussel and Oyster farming, eel traps, Lobster boats and traps and the people that work them all. We will also visit the inlet to Savage Harbor for a short walk on the beach.
